Chaparral 2A s/n: 002

Chaparral 2B made by Autoart ref. 66596 and modified by me to represent the 1964 Chaparral 2A car (see Chaparral 2A from a Chaparral 2B for more details). To achieve this all the fender vents were removed, the right and left cooling openings on the top of the front fenders were closed and the rear air deflector was modified.

  1. This car is closer to the Chaparral 2 raced in the Players 200, rather than the car driven in the Canadian GP for Sports Cars later that season. At the time of that win, the car had the fully louvered bodywork, with an adjustable (for height) rear spoiler. By the way, chassis 2-002 had a chrome plated roll bar. 2-001 and 2-003 had black painted roll bars. Also, there was no car ever designated as the "2A". That was a figment of the racing press. There was no true 2B either, although some have referred to the Chevy built GSIIb as the "Chaparral 2B". With few exceptions, every race where the cars appeared, they appeared in a slightly different form from the preceding race. Development was continuous.

I'm providing links to three photos I have uploaded. It's unlikely that you've seen either before. The first is of the Chaparral Hall drove in the Players 200 in June of 1965. Your model is almost a perfect match. The second is the Chaparral Hall drove to a win at Mosport in September of 1965. I rebuilt an AUTOart Chaparral to match that car (third photo). Finally, I am providing a link to my Chaparral Pinterest page, which has a great many unpublished photos of Chaparrals that may be aid to you as a modeler.

  2. I forgot the mention.... Chaparral 2-002 was assigned to mechanic Benjamin (Wesley) Sweet. Benjamin has been very helpful in guiding to getting the details right. He had the last word on it...
